Heroin smuggling-High-powered probe body may visit UK next week

To probe the most sensational heroin smuggling case and also trace the kingpins, a high-powered 7-member Investigation team comprising the members of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and other Intelligence agencies are likely to fly for United Kingdom (UK) next week.

The Investigation team with the help of the INTERPOL (International Police Organisation) members and 'drug squad' of Scotland Yard will conduct an overall investigation to collect the evidences heroin allegedly smuggled by a couple of Bangladeshi ghost companies led by the country's one of the food manufacturing company BD Food Limited, a highly places source of the CID told the Bangladesh Observer on Sunday.

According to the reliable sources, the Ministry of Home affairs has requested the British High Commission in Dhaka to take necessary steps regarding the proposed visit of the Bangladeshi Investigation Team to the UK and also extend cooperation for the said purpose.

After getting a preliminary investigation report, the Home Ministry officially requested the Foreign Ministry for taking necessary steps about the visit of Bangladeshi investigators to the UK within a short time emphasising the necessity of the visit for the sake of the country's image, a Foreign Ministry source said .

A senior official of the CID said that a powerful syndicate is involved in heroin smuggling to the United Kingdom (UK) and so far has been sent about 77 kilograms of heroin worth about Taka one billion in the last two years since 2004.

According to a high official of the BD Foods Ltd and four others ghost companies are involved in heroin smuggling to the UK.

But, getting no direct evidences, the CID still could ot make final report about the case as the evidences of the seized has to be placed before the court. At the same time, the investigators those prepared the seizure list have to give concrete statements before the court to ensure punishment of those involved the 'smuggling racket'.

The caged owner of the BD Foods Ltd Badrudozza Monin has confessed to the CID about his involvement in the heroin smuggling. He also said that getting all sorts of cooperation from some highly influential persons, a local crime racket has sent several consignments of heroin to the UK in last two years.

But, getting no concrete evidences CID failed to file final chargesheet till the date. Not, only that CID team has to go to the UK to collect the evidences.

The Chairman of BD Foods Limited Badruduzza Chowdhury now has been staying at BSMMU after getting an interim bail last week. However, he is under te supervision of intelligence agencies.

An investigator said that the leaders of the local crime racket also kept close relation with an International smuggling syndicate, which helped them to sent those illegal consignments to the UK.

It is learnt that the CID Investigation team has been looking for other members of the local crime racket to unearth the total scenario of the heroin smuggling from Bangladesh.

The investigators also have collected some names of the international smuggling syndicate who purchased the heroin sent from Bangladesh.
