SC judges continue court boycott

Thursday December 07 2006 08:32:45 AM BDT

Country's highest judiciary remained dysfunctional for a second straight day on Wednesday as the judges of both divisions of the Supreme Court continued court boycott while rival lawyers and their clerks staged agitation.(The Bangladesh Today)

The judges have been sticking out for apology by the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Bar Council, the statutory body regulating the lawyers, for the November 30 vandalism.

The pro-14-party group demands resignation of the Chief Justice and the Attorney General for their 'unconstitutional' activities-meaning the halting of the case proceedings involving the caretaker-government chief.

On the other side of the divide, the BNP-tilted group calls for bringing their 'counterpart-offenders' to book and drawing contempt proceedings against them.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) yesterday held a general meeting where the speakers denounced the decision of judges boycotting the courts and filing sedition case against the leading lawyers, including Dr Kamal Hossain, SCBA president M Amir-Ul Islam

and Bar Council vice-chairman Rokanuddin Mahmud.n

The meeting seconded Today's (Thursday) countrywide demonstration plan announced by the Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parisad (SASP), a conglomerate of various lawyers' forum. After yesterday's demonstrations, a delegation of the BNP-tilted lawyers submitted memorandum to the President at Bangabhaban apprising him of the November 30 vandalism in the Supreme Court compound and sought redress.

A Bangabhaban statement, meanwhile, said President and Chief Adviser Iajuddin Ahmed called upon all to protect sanctity of the highest judiciary.
