13 senior lawyers charged with SC vandalism

Saturday December 23 2006 08:34:23 AM BDT

Investigators Friday filed a charge sheet against 13 senior lawyers for the recent acts of vandalism at the Supreme Court (SC), reports bdnews24.com.Framer of the constitution Dr Kamal Hossain, the Supreme Court Bar Association (Financial Express)

(SCBA) President Amir-Ul-Islam and the Bangladesh Bar Council Vice-chairman Rokanuddin Mahmud are among the accused in the charge sheet filed with a special court of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM's) Court, Dhaka.

The investigators led by Naimur Rahman of the Criminal Intelligence and Detective Unit dropped sedition charges against the lawyers but found evidence of involvement in the acts of vandalism on November 30 at the country's apex court.

Omar Sadat, son-in-law of BNP leader and former minister Shahjahan Siraj, filed the case with the CMM's court on December 4 against the lawyers. The allegation has been made under the case that a group of 'lawyers' rampaged through the Supreme Court after Chief Justice Syed JR Mudassir Husain had halted a verdict process on writ appeals against President-cum-Chief Adviser of the caretaker government Iajuddin Ahmed.

Leaders of the 14-party alliance filed the writ appeals challenging the authority of Iajuddin as the caretaker government chief.

Tania Amir, Subrata Chowdhury and former secretary of the SCBA Inayetur Rahim are also among the accused.
