Press attacked, journos injured in 4 dists including capital

DHAKA: A bomb was hurled at a printing press of a national daily in capital, two journalists came under attacks in Faridpur and Pabna while a robbery was committed in Somoy Television office in Khulna city on Saturday.(The Independent)

In Faridpur: Sadarpur upazila correspondent of `Somokal` MM Shahjahan Baki Mia came under attack by local criminals on his way back home from a function held at Abdullahbad High School premises at Abdullahbad at Nasirabad union in Bhanga upazila in the afternoon.

Local sources said a gang of 10 identified miscreants, equipped with sticks swooped on Baki Mai near the school and mercilessly beat him leaving him seriously injured. He was rushed to Bhanga Hospital which referred him to Faridpur Medical College Hospital following deterioration. He received severe injury in his left eye, hospital sources said.

The attackers also snatched away his digital camera, cell phone set and cash Tk 2,000 from him.

In Khulna: A robbery was committed in the city office of Somoy TV, a private television station on Friday late night.

Somoy TV Khulna Bureau chief Tariqul Islam and sadar thana police told UNB that a gang of miscreants might have entered the office by breaking open the lock of its main door at around 11 pm and committed robbery after all journalists and employees left the office, situated at `Nasir Garden`, a four-storied building at Moulvipara More (intersection).

The robbers decamped with a live inconder server (DRC) worth around Tk 7.70 lakh, PC of script writer of Asus Company worth Tk 33,000, two 18 “ LCD monitors worth Tk 22,000, Intel processor of audit panel worth Tk 4,000, 2 hard discs of Samsung Co worth Tk 12,000, PC 2 card (Panasonic) worth Tk 40,000, Graphics Card of audit panel worth Tk 14,000 and other accessories worth Tk 903,400.

Somoy TV GM Aktar Hossain, other high officials went to Khulna from Dhaka Saturday afternoon to visit its local office.

Senior police officials, RAB and detectives visited the TV office on Saturday morning.

In Pabna: The district correspondent of ntv, a Dhaka-based private television channel, was called into Edward College campus by unknown callers over mobile phone and was indiscriminately chopped by a gang of miscreants on arrival on the campus in the afternoon.

Severely injured ABM Fazlur Rahman, also local correspondent of Dhaka-based national vernacular daily newspaper `Somokal` was admitted to Pabna Medical College Hospital (PMCH), where doctors stated that he was profusely bleeding and his condition was critical.

In Dhaka: Unidentified miscreants hurled a hand bomb at the printing press of the Amar Desh, a vernacular daily in capital`s Tejgaon industrial area on Friday night.

However no casualty was reported. The bomb blast sent a panic wave in the area where other newspaper and printing presses are situated.

National Press Club (NPC) president Kamal Uddin Sabuj and general secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed in a joint statement on Saturday condemned the attacks on press and journalists saying those attacks made it difficult for the journalists to discharge their professional duties.

On the other hand, it posed a big threat to the freedom of mass media, they added.

BFUJ and DUJ leaders also condemned the attacks.

They demanded of the government to arrest the attackers immediately and mete out exemplary punishment to them.
