US concerned over effectiveness, integrity of Grameen Bank

Dhaka, Sept 6 (UNB) – The United States has expressed its concern over maintaining the effectiveness and integrity of Grameen Bank.

He also welcomed the strong partnership between the United States and Bangladesh, including Bangladesh’s support for Afghanistan.

US Deputy Secretary of State also appreciated Bangladesh’s pivotal role in promoting cooperation and connectivity within the South and Southeast Asian regions.

They also discussed opportunities for expanding bilateral trade.

During the meeting, the US concern was also expressed about maintaining the critical role of a vibrant civil society and strong democratic institutions to Bangladesh’s social and economic development, according to the US embassy release.

Dr Dipu Moni, clarifying the position of the government over Grameen Bank, said the government is committed to protecting the interests of millions of women borrowers of the Nobel-winning organisation, said a PID handout.

She said Grameen Bank is now functioning as per its own rules and regulations and has become a more efficient organisation than any other time in the past.
