Tuesday October 02 2012 23:18:13 PM BDT

Dhaka, Oct 2 (UNB) – At least 15 people were injured and two vehicles torched in clashes between the supporters of BNP and police in front of the opposition party’s Nayapaltan central office on Tuesday.

Witnesses said the trouble began at about 4:15pm as police tried to foil a rally of BNP protesting the attacks on the 18-party alliance leaders and activists and vandalism of a BNP office in Netrakona.

At one stage, police charged batons on the opposition activists to disperse them, triggering a clash that left at least 10 people, including a policeman, injured.

Protesting the police action, the opposition activists torched a vehicle near Ananda Bhaban Community centre at about 4:30pm.

They also attacked police with brickbats in front of the community centre at about 5pm, leaving police constable Kawsar injured.

Police fired teargas shells and charged batons to bring the situation under control.

The angry BNP men also set fire to a passenger bus in front of Mahtab Centre at Bijoynagar around 5:15pm.

A chase and counter-chase between the cops and BNP men was on till filing of the report at about 5:30pm.
